Nola Baking Co. Differentiates its Granola in Custom, Stand-Up Pouches

Nola Baking Co. is the playful and nutritious Toronto-based granola brand operated by founder Julie Mitz, a lawyer and mother of three who decided to leave corporate life behind to pursue her passion: healthy eating.

“I was looking for something more fulfilling than contract negotiation. So, when I started working part-time, I began exploring my other interests,” said Julie.

Julie is passionate about the great outdoors, as well as healthy eating. 

“While training for a marathon in 2017, I began looking for snacks that could fuel my run and couldn’t find many. So, I started to make a nut-based granola that was high in protein with no refined sugar,” she said.

Few granola options on the market offered the protein and low sugar she craved, so Julie made her own. Seeing her granola so well received by friends and family, combined with the lack of nutritious options on shelves, Julie saw her opportunity and in 2019 she launched Nola.

Custom Pouches for the Win 

Understanding the importance of a great granola package, and great design, Julie launched Nola straight to digitally printed packages so her product could stand out from traditional granola brands. 

“I decided to print the bags digitally because I wanted to differentiate from the boring or ordinary bags on the market and stand out,” said Julie.

Julie says she began working with another digital printer but moved over to ePac when a colleague introduced her to the team. 

“ePac seemed very professional and knowledgeable, and had better pricing. They explained all of the materials and packaging options,” described Julie. “Plus, they have their own facility and thus have more control over the timeline. I felt there was more transparency in the relationship. And the turnaround time is really attractive. As a new company, orders ebb and flow. The granola is sold at over 200 locations across Canada, including stores like Whole Foods, Healthy Planet, and IGA, as well as online. Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit

Carrie Morey launched her homemade biscuit company in 2005 as Callie’s Charleston Biscuits. Her goal was to introduce her mother (Callie’s) biscuits to the entire country. In 2014, she opened her restaurant, Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit and shortly after renamed her biscuit company to take on the popular eatery name. 

Sixteen years after her original launch, Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit now has national retail exposure and a huge following. What started as a biscuit company is now a national brand with products including biscuits, Pimento cheese, jams, coffee, as well as four eateries, a food truck, and even a documentary lifestyle television show following the daily life of mom and entrepreneur Carrie Morey.

The Importance of Rebranding

The creative team at Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit knows the importance of great packaging, great branding, and great storytelling. 

“People soon knew the name from visiting the eatery. We found year after year by doing market research that people really connected with this restaurant. After extensive market research and customer polling, we rebranded the biscuit company as Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit,” said Tarah Boyleston, Marketing Director for the brand.

It would be the first rebranding for the company and also the beginning of building a cohesive brand that would help take the company nationwide. 

“We wanted people to recognize the brand in grocery stores. With the name change came a whole new look too. Before, it was very southern and traditional, but Carrie loves color and excitement, so the new look shifted more toward her personality,” said Boyleston.

The cohesive look helps better tell the brand story and offers a recognizable look for all products (and locations) within the Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit brand. Consistent packaging with a strong logo, bright colors, and quality materials all lends itself to create a better customer experience.

Biscuit Mix Flexible Packaging Challenges

To bring the biscuits to more homes, Morey and her team had decided to sell biscuit mixes that consumers could bake at their convenience. At launch, the biscuit mixes were packaged in a vacuum-sealed plastic bag inside a decorative cloth bag.  

“What we came to find was that people loved gifting the cloth bags, but the price point was a little too high for daily use,” said Boyleston. 

The company then moved from cloth to plastic stand-up pouches sourced outside of the U.S., but soon faced another problem.

“We struggled because they couldn’t meet our deadlines, which had a big impact on us because the mixes were selling so fast,” said Boyleston.

Because of the stay-at-home orders during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit mixes had quickly surged as the brand’s number one seller. 

“Covid closed everybody down… with the surge in consumers baking at home, our biscuit mix took over as the number one seller on our website,” said Boyleston.

Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit was looking for a solution to the shipping delays and slow turnarounds while also undergoing a major rebranding in 2020. The brand was looking at new bags for the new look that would include bright colors, whimsical touches, and a bold pop of personality.

Soul Food Starter Kits Launch in Stand-Up Pouches

Booker’s Soul Food Starter Kits bring authentic southern cooking to consumers’ homes with pantry-ready seasoning kits. The company is owned by the husband-and-wife team Claude and Crystal Booker out of Macedonia, Ohio.

The Start of Soul Food Starters Branding

The Soul Food Starter Kits is the new retail line that follows the duo’s already successful business known as Simply Southern Sides, a foodservice brand that provides food for hot food bars in retail stores and other foodservice avenues. 

During the COVID-19 pandemic, as hot bars were shutting down, the duo found a new way to provide its southern cooking to families and launched a retail line in December 2020. 

“COVID was a big part of our launch. I always wanted to do a CPG line, but I was a little nervous,” said Claude Booker. “But since the world is moving to cooking at home, I had no choice.”

Thankfully, Booker had previously been introduced to ePac and the digital printing process that would help him launch his successful retail line.

“I met ePac eight months before launching. Mike from ePac sent out samples and I said, ‘now this is interesting,’ and I held onto it. And then COVID came. I said ok, I know what I want to do― I want to do soul food,” said Booker.

“ePac removes the challenge of having to run 10,000-20,000 SKUs. I didn’t have to worry about funding and plates since it was digital printing. I could focus on a great design and great images and I knew I would look like a million-dollar brand with ePac,” said Booker.

Being able to remain flexible is one of the main benefits of digital printing. For Booker that meant being able to offer the big retailer Stop & Shop the ability to sell the individual packets of the starters in addition to the large bag.

“Stop & Shop wanted to sell the individual packets at their stores. Since they were already branded and since ePac can print both stand-up pouches and rollstock, it was easy. Digital printing allowed us to be nimble and flexible to sell both,” said Booker.

The mixes are sold in a stand-up pouch with six packets inside so consumers can create the southern side on six different occasions. ePac digitally prints both the exterior resealable stand-up pouch and the individual packets inside. 

“It’s been a really great partnership. Today in stores, beautiful, stand-up pouches are prevalent and with ePac I was able to look like one of the major players right at launch,” said Booker.

PCR Pouches Allow Coconut Whisk to Achieve a Broader Reach with Less Environmental Impact

Coconut Whisk, an all-vegan, gluten-free baking mix company, was created by Bella Lam and Myles Olson in 2018. Their passion for the vegan lifestyle and the positive impact it has had on their health and the environment, as well as the opportunity to fill a void in the market, led to the launch of the brand.

Getting Started

The duo created the baking mix line while attending college together at Minnesota State University, Mankato. While working toward her degree in public health, Bella Lam discovered the untapped potential of the vegan food market.

“I noticed that there weren’t many options for gluten free and vegan baking mixes. I grew up baking and I wanted more options. So, I thought, ‘why don’t I just do it?’” said Lam.

Lam shared her idea of creating a vegan baking mix line with Olson and since they both wanted to help promote the vegan lifestyle, he was in. They began researching and googling how to get started, and how to launch their own business.

“We spent a few weeks creating the right blend, with the right ingredients, and figuring out what goes together well to make it gluten free and vegan. We changed the recipe a few times,” said Lam.

While perfecting the recipe, and researching how to start a business, Lam then learned about a business competition on campus. Thinking that this could be a good experience, they entered it, got a mentor, and created a business plan. 

“We figured out as much as possible about how to get started,” said Lam. “We spent a few months prepping for the competition, obtaining our food license, establishing an LLC, and getting all our ducks in a row.”

To the surprise of Lam and Olson, Coconut Whisk won the competition for the food division, which gave them the confidence to keep pursuing their dream. 

“The competition validated that this was a good product, and we had a solid business plan,” said Lam. 

Launching the Product

Alongside prepping for the business competition, Lam and Olson had already been selling the product in farmers markets and pop-up locations, and quickly saw how popular their vegan baking mixes were. Plus, they were seeing a direct response from promoting the mixes on social media.

“At one of our pop-ups, a customer came in to buy the product after reading a social post,” said Lam. “What helped us launch was having an active social media presence… being present and engaged. Even before the competition and pop-ups, I was hyping up the product and brand on social media, and sharing as much as possible.” 

With the win under their belt and a growing fan base, the Coconut Whisk team was ready to officially launch their baking mix line. 

The Packaging Journey

The first step was to start investing in inventory. For the pop-up stores and markets, Lam says she was packaging the mixes in kraft paper pouches with printed stickers adhered to each one.

But for mass market sales, the team needed a natural baking mix packaging boost. After trying to get the mixes into market, Lam described that one distributor even told her to come back when she had real packaging. So, she knew that the time for new baking mix packaging was now. 

“We knew we wanted to do branded packaging… what we had before was basic,” said Lam. “Deciding to get branded custom pouches was an organic decision – the product was doing really well, so we thought, ‘what’s the next step?’”

After meeting some of the ePac staffers at a networking event, and learning about digital printing and what it could do for them, she knew she found what she was looking for. 

“It was easy to decide to go with ePac. The company was in Minnesota, too and offered us low order minimums…We knew we wanted to upgrade. We loved that ePac was not as expensive as other suppliers, and that it’s digitally printed so it doesn’t take forever to get the order,” said Lam.

Without Printing Plates, One Guilt-Free Brownie Company Finds the Space It Needs to Grow

Eat Me Guilt Free is a woman-owned specialty baked goods company that currently produces “guilt-free” brownies and cookies. The sweets are all low-calorie, low carb, and high in protein. 

Founder and owner, Cristie Besu, is a registered nurse and certified sports nutritionist that created the line of protein-rich snacks in response to her clients asking for a sweet treat that wouldn’t derail their diet plan. So, Besu started baking the specialty brownies in her kitchen. She eventually perfected the recipe and created a whole line-up of baked goods, teaching herself how to run a business through research, resourcefulness, and creativity.

“I received a lot of satisfaction seeing people make life changes. I quickly realized that it would be impactful to make a whole product line,” explains Besu.

While the product’s recipe and packaging both have evolved since the original trial run, her goal has stayed the same: to deliver a great tasting and convenient protein product to satisfy any sweet cravings.  

It has always been important to Besu that everything be made local in Miami, Florida. She was born and raised in Miami, raised her three children there, and wanted her business to support her community in the same way it’s supported her, from her product to her employees to her vendors. Every protein-packed sweet is made in 2 commercial kitchens in Miami. Besu works hard to give young Miami women with entrepreneurial spirit room to grow in her company. When Besu originally began to scale the company, she hired a conventional printer that had high order minimums, needed plates for each package SKU, and required a new plate for any changes made to an existing SKU. Because of this, Besu had to sacrifice her flavor line-up to be able to afford the new packaging. 

“We started with a clear film and a sticker, then went to printed flow-wrapped film, but with a young company like ours, it was hard to pay for the plates for each SKU. So, we were forced to only sell one flavor at that point,” says Besu.

That was a major disappointment for Besu who, from the start, strived to offer a variety of options to her customers, as well as respond to consumer requests for new flavors. 

“The cost prevented us from responding to our consumers as we were growing,” says Besu.

But when ePac came to Besu’s operation in Miami, FL, she was introduced to a completely new way of creating baked goods packaging, one that would allow her to sell as many flavors and varieties as she could dream of.

In the beginning, the Eat Me Guilt Free products were sold 100% direct to consumer. But now, in part because of the improved packaging, the line is sold in local Florida grocers, online, and to independent retailers nationwide. In fact, starting in early 2020, Eat Me Guilt Free’s eight SKUs will be available in every Vitamin Shoppe nationwide.

The new packaging partnership has not only allowed the brand to grow, but to correct some packaging problems that plagued the company early on. 

“While the (old) packages were being handled, they would easily open, creating all sorts of problems,” says Besu.

For Iya Foods, It’s ALL About Connecting with Consumers Through Packaging

Toyin Kolawole loves food. She also has a natural talent for business, an entrepreneurial spirit, and an eye for great packaging.

Kolawole was born in Nigeria to an entrepreneurial family that owned several businesses, including a local store. It was there that she learned a sense of what customers want, how to best serve them, and how to run a business. After she arrived in the U.S., Kolawole worked for various Fortune 500 brands. Dutch Cookies Stay Cozy in Pouches

Cassandra Plas started Gezellig Cookies because of her fondness for the Dutch cookies her Oma would make for her while growing up. As an adult, she missed the cookies so must she started making them, giving them away to family and friends, and then in 2015 founded Gezellig Cookies. Located in Central Florida, Gezellig Cookies, which is a Dutch word which roughly means “cozy,” sells its cookies to specialty retailers. The company is best known for its stroopwafels, a waffle-like cookie with caramel in the center.

Prior to working with ePac, Plas was packing her popular cookies in a plain pouch with hand-applied labels that included the company logo on the front, and nutrition and flavor information on the back. The front labels were the same for each cookie, regardless of flavor, so consumers didn’t know which was which without turning the package over. The stroopwafels come in many flavors, including a vegan option, so clearly displaying this information was an important selling point.

“When we started selling the cookies at farmers’ markets, it was easy to tell each customer which flavor was which, but when we started selling them in stores, we knew we needed a better package to differentiate the cookies by flavor,” says Cassandra Plas.

That’s when Plas started to look for a solution. After contacting different suppliers that quoted her high minimum orders and long lead times, someone recommended ePac. She quickly realized that ePac was the right partner for her and in 2018, the two companies started working toward that solution.

What’s more is that each flavor is represented by a different color so that consumers can easily tell which stroopwafel is key lime, vanilla, chocolate, vegan, etc. They look more professional and more premium too, and really stand out on the shelf.

“Our sales have definitely increased since adopting the new package. One customer of ours is experiencing double the sales,” says Plas.

The new package also saves Plas and her team a lot of time because they are no longer printing and applying labels. Also, the new pouch ensures better freshness for the cookies than the previous pouch, as well as better brand recognition, something that is so important for a small company like Gezellig Cookies.

“Since the switch, I have had nothing but positive feedback! Our customers like the colors, and they’ve commented to me that the packaging is easy to read, and differentiate between flavors. It’s made a big difference in stores and our customers are thrilled by the switch! The new packaging has even allowed us to bring on some new (and big) customers!” says Plas.
