Mushplus Agri-Foods: Empowering Communities and Building Trust Through Packaging

Mushplus agri-foods isn’t just a food brand, it’s a mission in motion.

A brand built on passion, purpose, and the pursuit of real change. And at the heart of that change is packaging that tells a story, builds trust, and makes an impact.

Winners out of 44 competing teams from 16 tertiary institutions across Ghana, Mushplus agri-foods emerged victorious in the prestigious 2025 Kosmos Innovation Centre (KIC) AgriTech Challenge Pro, securing $10,000 in seed funding to scale their mission.

At the core of the Mushplus journey is a team of four driven young founders: Isaac Assumang, Anokye Joseph, Abigail Sume, and Emmanuella Aryee. What brought them together wasn’t just entrepreneurship, it was a shared desire to solve two deep rooted issues in Ghana: post-harvest losses and protein energy malnutrition among children.

Their solution? Create nutritious, mushroom fortified noodles made from locally sourced oyster mushrooms, an affordable, high protein superfood, while uplifting farmers and rural communities in the process.

But this win didn’t come easy. In 2024, they entered the competition and were eliminated early. Not because their idea lacked potential, but because their packaging lacked impact.

They had the product. They had passion. But they didn’t yet have the packaging to match.

Fast forward to 2025 with renewed vision, grit, and a new packaging partner in ePac — they didn’t just re-enter the competition — they won it.

What changed? Their packaging told the story their product alone couldn’t.

From Paper to Power: The Turning Point

In the early days, Mushplus agri-foods used basic paper based packaging. While the idea was innovative, the packaging wasn’t. It lacked durability, couldn’t keep out moisture, and faded within weeks.

Worse still, retailers and customers weren’t impressed. “People thought we were just experimenting,” said Abigail. “The product was great, but the packaging didn’t reflect that.”

Mushplus needed a solution that was as impactful as their mission, something that could extend shelf life, maintain product quality, and give them a credible, premium appearance.

Enter ePac: A Game-Changing Partnership

When Mushplus discovered ePac Flexible Packaging in Ghana, it wasn’t just about printing pouches — it was about building a future. What drew them in was ePac’s understanding of startups, affordable low minimum orders, and quick, open communication.

“There was something different about how ePac handled our inquiries,” said Abigail. “They listened. They corrected our labels. They believed in our journey.”

A Pouch with Purpose

With ePac’s high quality stand-up pouches, Mushplus saw an instant transformation. Their products looked professional, trustworthy, and ready for shelves not just in Ghana, but globally. But it wasn’t just about looks.

“The new pouches extended our shelf life from a few weeks to several months, possibly a year,” said Anokye. “That changed everything.”

Suddenly, customers saw them as a serious business. Retailers were interested. Sales grew. The packaging wasn’t just protecting the product — it was opening doors.

And in a culture where visuals drive buying behavior, especially online, the colorful, vibrant pouch became a powerful tool for storytelling and trust-building.

More Than Just Mushrooms

Why mushrooms? As Abigail puts it: “They’re high in protein and fiber, underutilized, and extremely perishable. That meant farmers were constantly losing out.”

By turning this vulnerable crop into shelf stable, nutrient dense noodles, Mushplus was solving a triple challenge: nutrition, food waste, and farmer empowerment.

And thanks to ePac’s resealable, moisture resistant pouches, these once perishable products could finally travel far, last longer, and reach more people.

Looking Ahead: A National Brand in the Making

Today, Mushplus agri-foods is no longer a student project, it’s a rising food brand on a mission. With their eye on expanding across Ghana, launching new flavors, and eventually exporting their products, the Mushplus team sees ePac not just as a packaging supplier but as a long-term growth partner.

“Packaging is everything,” Anokye said. “Without it, our product wouldn’t exist the way it does. ePac helped bring our vision to life.”

The Packaging Difference

For Mushplus agri-foods, packaging was more than a container — it was a catalyst. A transformation that turned a local idea into a nationally respected product.

With ePac, their packaging now communicates value, tells a story, and builds credibility with every pouch sold.

And for the young team behind Mushplus, it’s just the beginning.

“ePac helped us go from surviving to thriving,” says Abigail. And that, truly, is the packaging difference.
