Honoring Dr. Harvey R. Levenson, Champion of Printing and Mentor to ePac

We are sad to share the news of Dr. Harvey R. Levenson’s passing.

Dr. Harvey R. Levenson, professor emeritus and former head of California Polytechnic State University’s Graphic Communication Department, was 83. Across more than three decades he educated and mentored generations of print and packaging professionals, wrote seminal textbooks, and led the Graphic Communication Institute.

He was also a major inspiration for the founding and growth of ePac Flexible Packaging. Carl Joachim, ePac CMO and Co‑founder (retired), reflects on their relationship:

“Harvey and I have known each other since 2008. He became a friend, a mentor to me, and a tremendous partner through his leadership of the Cal Poly Graphic Communication Institute and the Graphic Communication Department. While my engagement with Harvey covered many aspects of the graphic communication industry, it was perhaps his role in advising Jack Knott and me on the creation of ePac Flexible Packaging, the world’s first all‑digital flexible packaging company, that stands out to me. From helping to conduct research aimed at market requirements for emerging digital technologies in packaging, to assembling a first‑of‑its‑kind focus group on Cal Poly’s San Luis Obispo campus with a dozen large CPG companies to discuss emerging trends in packaging technology, his impact was huge.”

That influence shaped ePac’s mission to empower small and medium brands through digitally printed flexible packaging.

“As I reflect on the ten years since ePac was founded, and the eighteen years I have known him and counted him as a friend, it is safe to say that ePac probably would never have been if it was not for Dr. Harvey Levenson. He will be missed.”

We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Levenson’s family, colleagues, and the many professionals whose careers he shaped.
